Know Your Camera – On and Off the Field

If you’re new to photography or still finding your rhythm with the camera, this is where it all starts. During the tour, we don’t just go on safaris, we also slow down, observe, and learn. Whether you’re holding a DSLR for the first time or you’ve been dabbling for a while, we’ll walk you through the essential tools and settings that help you take full control of your camera.

This isn’t a classroom lecture. It’s hands-on, field-tested learning, designed to build your confidence and sharpen your eye.

What You’ll Learn

We’ll cover the core concepts of photography through real-life examples and practical exercises. You’ll understand not just what each setting does, but when and why to use it.

Here’s what we’ll explore:

  • Exposure: The foundation of every photo. Learn how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together to create a balanced shot, whether you’re in golden light or deep shade.

  • Composition: Go beyond the rule of thirds.

  • Shutter Speed: From freezing a charging tiger to creating motion blur in flocks of birds, you’ll learn how to control time with your camera.

  • Aperture: Understand how depth of field affects your storytelling—when to isolate a subject and when to keep everything in focus.

  • ISO: Learn how to handle low light without introducing too much grain, and when it’s worth pushing ISO for the shot.

  • Focusing Techniques: Single Point or Dynamic? Back-button focus? We’ll explore how to get tack-sharp results, even with fast-moving wildlife.

  • Metering: Understand how your camera reads light, and when to trust it—or override it. Spot metering vs. evaluative, and how to expose for your subject, not the background.

  • White Balance: Learn how different light sources affect colour, and how to keep your images looking natural—or creatively stylised—based on the mood you want.

  • Autofocus Modes: We’ll cover AF-S, AF-C, tracking modes, and how to set up your camera to follow the action reliably.

  • RAW vs JPEG: What’s the difference? Which should you shoot in? Learn how file types affect your editing flexibility and image quality.

When and How We’ll Learn

This learning isn’t packed into a single session. It’s spread out and adapted to real-life scenarios:

  • During Safaris: You’ll apply these concepts while photographing real wildlife moments. We’ll review settings on the go, troubleshoot issues, and help you react quickly to changing conditions in the field.

  • Leisure Hours: Back at the lodge or camp, we’ll have relaxed sessions to review images, break down what worked (and what didn’t), and dive deeper into camera settings or techniques you want to improve.

The goal is simple: to help you become more comfortable with your gear, more confident in your decisions, and more intentional with your photography, so you’re not just clicking, but creating.
